Global Warming - Baffin Island 2006
Inuit See Signs In Arctic Thaw
The Washington Post, March 22, 2006; Page A01
This is another front page article -
finally, proof that it is too late
- It is 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than normal
- All the ice is gone 2 months too soon
- It is now too late to save the planet
Let's try a different spin
- Do to Global Warming, Robins, Barn Owls, and hornets have been able to expand their range
- The local people, who once had to fish on the ice, will now be able to use boats,
and because the waters are warmer, they will be able to catch more fish and feed their family's
with less work
- Gray whales, pollock, and salmon are expanding their ranges
- Some animals, such as seals and polar bears, will have a few years of stress, but will recover
further north in what was previously uninhabitable fields of ice
Unfortunately, this is a real scare article with no useful data.
Yes, this is the warmest winter since records started being kept in 1948 ... so what, Europe is undergoing the coldest winter on record (funny, I keep hearing this but I can't find a good reference).
It seems that the real story is that the Inuit used to be a nomadic culture.
The photograph in the article shows homes made of brick and wood with gabled roofs.
The real problem is that the Inuit have chosen to build a fixed town and are no longer
able to move with the weather.
So, I claim that these people should not be blaming climate changes
for destroying their culture - they have done it themselves.
