Once you have accepted something as truth, it is no longer science.
Science has told us that many things are true ... And then said - oops, that was a mistake, this is not the truth.
But, that is the way real science is, you are always learning, always questioning. Sometimes, things that "everyone knows to be true" have to be thrown out.
However, when politicians put their hands in your pocket ... bad science can get very expensive ... it might even kill you.
Global Warming | Chicken Little says - "The sky is falling" ... I say "Let's have some facts" |
DDT | Once thought to make bird shells too thin - but is now considered safe
reference |
Dioxin | The poison in Agent Orange and all white paper (think Coffee Filter, News Paper, ...) |
Freon | Hole in the ozone ... not! |
Extinction | Human behavior (cutting trees, building cities, using cars) has caused the highest extinction rate ever. The main problem with this is that there is no way to know how many new species are created every year. Diversity may be actually increasing, but there is no way to know. |
Dietary Bunk
Salt | First they say "Salt is bad for you", now you can eat all you want |
Dietary Fiber | Apparently, there never were any studies connecting fiber to reduced cancer risk |
Eggs and Milk | In the 1960's, eggs and milk were part of a healthy diet, now, they will kill you |
Cholesterol | Apparently, bacteria, not Cholesterol, causes heart disease |
Low fat diet | |
Butter vs Margarine | In the 1960's, butter was bad for you ... so margarine was created. In the 2000's, margarine contains "trans" fats, so now it is worse than butter. |
Myers-Briggs | Almost all of us have had to suffer through this psycho-babble test - Daily horoscopes are more useful |
Evolution | "We are all descended from apes"
That's not really what evolution says, a more correct statement is "Apes and humans are both descended from a common, now extinct, life form" |
Age of the Universe | The current theory claims that the universe expanded at several million times the speed of light ... but now nothing can go that fast |
Redshift | I was taught that the redshift of the galaxies was due to the Doppler effect. The latest theory says that it is actually because the expanding universe stretches the light traveling through it. |
